Leading causes of bicycle accidents with motor vehicles

Many ride bicycles in Florida. Some ride simply to get some exercise and others use it as their mode of transportation. In many places, these bicyclists need to share the road with the other motor vehicles on the road.

While most bicyclists do what they can to stay out of traffic, there are some instances where it becomes unavoidable. In addition, as bicyclists are much smaller than everything else, many drivers may not see them as they are driving.

These two things lead to many bicycle accidents each year and unfortunately, many of the bicyclists involved in the accidents end up dying as a result. In 2016, there were a total of 840 bicyclist fatalities in the U.S. and 138 in Florida (4.3 percent of all fatalities on the roads, which was the highest percentage of any state), as a result of accidents with motor vehicles. Most of these fatalities also occurred in urban areas.

Eight hundred of the fatalities occurred in single vehicle accidents and in 78 percent the bicyclists was struck by the front of the motor vehicle. Passenger cars and light trucks, such as SUVs and pickup trucks, accounted for the majority of the accidents.

Moreover, for these two types of vehicles, well over 80 percent of the accidents involved the front end of the vehicle striking the bicycle. For accidents involving large trucks and busses, it was more common for the bicyclist to strike the sides of the vehicles.

Riding a bicycle in Florida has many benefits, but it also can be a dangerous activity as the bicyclists share the roads with other vehicles. This has led to many accidents and many fatalities and injuries for the bicyclists.

These injured bicyclists may be entitled to compensation for their injuries though, if another vehicle caused the accident. This compensation can pay for medical bills, lost income and potentially even pain and suffering. Experienced attorneys understand the devastation of these accidents and may be a useful resource.
